As the CFDA Awards — the yearly fashion awards by the Council of Fashion Designers of America — wound down last evening at Lincoln Center, certain cool packs around town either cut out early or made their own private late night away from the official after party at the Standard Hotel.
For the actual event itself, you can check out winners at Style.com and other mainstream outlets. I got a post event pr release with a selected photo of Gwyneth Paltrow wearing Michael Kors, with her date, Michael Kors with a suggestion to use it on my blog. By that time, I was already at Kenmare where people working with Burberry designer Christopher Bailey, recipient of the International Award from CFDA, had cut out of the awards early and were already chugging drinks in true Brit spirit! Later on, we were joined by birthday girl, model Irina Lazareanu, who turned 28 yesterday and other friends. These included, to name a few: musician Jamie Burke, the jeweler/actor Waris, stylist Keegan Singh, and his partner Eddie Borgo, who was up for a CFDA Award for accessories. (Eddie did not win but his stuff is ‘smokin so expect official kudos in the near future.)
Another ‘you had to know about it’ event occurred in true intimate bohemian style over the weekend, when Sean Lennon and his girlfriend, the lovely Charlotte Kemp, played a private show at the Rose Bar in the Gramercy Hotel. Again, like last night’s convergence at Kenmare, word spread through friends and friends of friends.
Charlotte, wearing a “Zappa” tee (as in Frank Zappa) and skin-tight leather leggings sang sweet backup melodies and Sean whipped out a surprise guitar solo. He’s starting to sound more and more like his father — the late great John Lennon — with each performance. Check out the video below.
The show also capped the premiere of “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead,” a film by another pal, director Jordan Galland. The flick, a vampire spoof playing for the next two weeks at Village East Cinema (12th Street and 2nd) stars Ralph Macchio (“Karate Kid”) and Jake Hoffman (son of actor Dustin Hoffman) with appearances by Waris (jewelry Waris!) and Devon Aoki (model, Benihana heiress.)
It just goes to show you that despite the mainstream infiltration of New York in the past five years or so, cool still happens in this city. You’ve just gotta know where to find it. Check out video below and for movie times: VillageEastCinema
